Old Time Colts Players

There are so many players for the Baltimore Colts and there is so little space to tell about them all, but this is a compilation of some you may remember. If you are a big fan of the Colts and if you are old enough, you may even remember the games listed here.

George Shaw was the QB in 1955, the year before Johnny Unitas came to the Colts, and later played for the NY Giants and one year with the AFL Denver Broncos. Many say Shaw's best year was 1955 when he threw 10 touchdowns. Joe Campanella came to the NFL in 1952 with the Cowboys but came to the Baltimore Colts and played with them for the six years of his career. Like Shaw, many say his best year was 1955. Raymond Berry made his NFL debut in 1955 with the Colts and played his complete 13-year career with them.

Johnny Unitas is a name to be remembered by all. He was cut from the Steelers in 1955 and came to the Colts in 1956. Unitas was not a commanding figure in football. At six foot one and 195 pounds, he was small. However, he made up for it with his skill, beating the NY Giants on Dec. 28, 1958 to win the championship in a sudden death playoff. While Unitas was with the Colts from 1956-1972 most of their games were victories. The NFL named him the third Greatest Player and Top Quarterback of All-Time. Johnny left the Colts in 1973 and retired from the Chargers in 1974. Johnny is in The Hall of Fame with nine other Colts. Johnny Unitas died of a heart attack September 11, 2002, but is remembered by a statue in front of the Ravens Stadium in Baltimore.
