Colts Superbowl Wins

The Colts have one of the most storied histories in the National Football League. The Colts franchise began play in 1953 as the Baltimore Colts. In the late 1960's, following the the merger of the American Football League and NFL, the Colts became a league powerhouse and made their first Super Bowl appearance in 1969 against the New York Jets.

The Colts where the clear favorite to win behind the coaching of Don Shula and the arm of Earl Morrall, but fell short in a 16-7 upset at the hands of Jets quaterback Joe Namath. Super Bowl III marked the first time that an NFL team to lost to an AFL team in a championship game.

The Colts would make it back to the title game, playing in Super Bowl V in 1971 and squaring off against the Dallas Cowboys. The Colts were victorious this time, winning the game 16-13, behind the accurate arm of Johnny Unitas. The leg of Jim O'Brien, who kicked the game winning field goal with 5 seconds left in the game, also helped propel the Colts to their first NFL title. was also the first time that a rookie head coach, Don McCafferty, would win a Superbowl.

After their Super Bowl victory in 1971. the Colts would have to wait 36 years and weather a relocation to Indianapolis, before appearing in their next Super Bowl in 2007 against the Chicago Bears.

The Colts appearance in Super Bowl XLI was the result of the teams dedication and hard work, and culminated one of their best seasons in franchise history. The Chicago Bears opened up with a 14-6 lead by halftime and the Colts were on the ropes early. However, under the leadership of veteran quarterback Peyton Manning, and a potent, dual-pronged rushing attack of Dominic Rhodes and Joseph Addai, the Colts came back to win the game 29-17. Super Bowl XLI was the Colts 2nd win in the "Big Game."
