Anthony “Tony” Dungy, was born in 1955 on October 6, and was raised in Jackson, Michigan. Tony and his wife Lauren have five children, two girls and three boys. Their second oldest son was found to have committed suicide in December of 2005.
Tony attended college at the University of Minnesota. While at college he played on the football team as quarterback. After college, he played for the Pittsburg Steelers as a safety from 1977-1978. He also played for the San Francisco 49ers.
After he finished playing football, Tony became a coach in 1980 at his alma mater. He was the defensive coach for the team. In 1981, Tony was hired as assistant coach at age twenty-five by the Steelers. Three short years later, he was to take charge of the defensive coordinator position.
Following the time with the Steelers, Tony went to be the defensive backs coach to the Kansas City Chiefs for three years ending in 1991. He then moved on from 1992-1995 to be the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings.
Tony was hired as the head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1996 and remained there until he was fired in 2001 because of the losses incurred by the team. Tony was hired by the Indianapolis Colts in January of 2002 as their head coach.
Tony Dungy became the first African-American to win a Super Bowl and is respected by many in the NFL. After the Super Bowl win, Tony Dungy decided to retire and work in his community to help others.
