Old Time Colts Players

If you look back into the history of the Colts as a football team, there was a game in 1958 for the professional football championship against the New York Giants. The game has been called “The Greatest Game Ever Played,” when you look at some of the members of that Colts team, it is a collection of some of the best old time Colts players.

The most well-known old time Colts player was a quarterback by the name of Johnny Unitas. Johnny was probably a hero of the majority of the National Football League quarterbacks in the late twentieth century. In 2002, the city of Baltimore built a 13 foot statue of Johnny, which stands at Raven Stadium honoring the late quarterback. Besides Unitas, there are several names that should be mentioned as great Colt players such as Alan “The Horse” Ameche, Gino Marchetti, Lenny Moore, Art Donovan, Jim Parker, and Gene “Big Daddy” Lipscomb. There are two players that teamed up with Unitas, to make that 1958 Colt team what they were. The first was his top receiver by the name of Raymond Berry, they paired up as the top passing combination of the day and probably the biggest threat to any defense in football. Second was John Mackey, which had to live through much controversy after being picked for the NFL Hall of Fame. To this day, Mackey has the second longest reception from Unitas in Colts history, 89 yards on October 30, 1966, against the Los Angeles Rams.

The history of the Baltimore Colts changed in 1984 when the team moved from Baltimore to its current home in Indianapolis, Indiana. It may be a new city for the Colts, but their heritage remains the same.
