The Indianapolis Colts Coaches

The Indianapolis Colts gained a new head coach with the retirement of Tony Dungy at the end of the 2008. Dungy, who had been the head coach since 2002, originally replaced Jim Mora as head coach. In the Dungy era, the Colts won their first Superbowl since moving to Indianapolis in 2007. Dungy's replacement as head coach is Jim Caldwell, who has been with the Colts for the last eight years. Caldwell spent his first three seasons with the Colts as their quarterbacks coach and the last five years as Tony Dungy's assistant head coach.

Caldwell was a four year starter at defensive back for the University of Iowa before starting his coaching career. He took his first coaching assignment in 1978 as an assistant coach for Southern Illinois. His other college stops along the way include Northwestern (1981), Colorado (1982-84), Louisville (1985) and Penn State (1986-92). Caldwell got his first head coaching chance with Wake Forest in 1993. In 1999, he coached Wake Forest to their first winning record and bowl game since 1992. Caldwell left Wake Forest after the 2000 season and became the quarterbacks coach for Tampa Bay in 2001.

Caldwell brings over 25 years of coaching experience to the Colts. Other coaches with experience on his staff include Clyde Christensen, assistant head coach/receivers coach in his eigth season with the Colts. Gene Huey, running back coach in his 18th season with the Colts, is the longest tenured coach in the team’s history at the same position.

Other coaches with 10 or more years of service with the Colts on Caldwell’s staff include Richard Howell, assistant strength coach, Tom Moore, offensive coordinator, Howard Mudd, offensive line coach, Mike Murphy, linebackers coach, and Jon Torine, strength and conditioning coach. Together, these men make the Colts what they are and will be in the new season.
