Coach Tony Dungy

Tony Dungy was born October 6, 1955, in Jackson, Michigan. He was enrolled at the University of Minnesota. Both of his parents were educators, one a high school English teacher and the other a physiology professor.

Before becoming a coach, he played three seasons in the National Football League. As coach, he served in various positions. He was first with the Pittsburgh Steelers, beginning there in 1981. He was invited back as coach from his former coach, which really put a feather in his cap.

The Kansas City Chiefs claimed him as their defensive backs coach from 1989-1991. The Minnesota Vikings had him as their defensive coordinator from 1992-1995, and then he served as head coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was fired there in January, 2002 because of the club's loss record. A highlight of his coaching career was when he led the Indianapolis Colts to the Super Bowl. In the Bowl, his team won over the Chicago Bears.

He is the first African American coach to have achieved such as win. On January 12th, 2009, he announced his retirement. However, he did not actually retire until after the 2008-2009 season.

His coaching style was that he did not belittle or scream at the players, he stayed calm. He would guide the players instead of goading them.

He is a family man, many times putting family first before his career. Dungy had six children, two daughters and four sons.
