Reggie Wayne surpassed the 8,000-yard receiving mark after his 2008 pro football season with the Indianapolis Colts. Although this is a major accomplishment it was also the season that he failed to increase his receptions as he had done since the 2001 season. In 2007 he totaled 104 receptions and in 2008 his total was 82 catches, 23 short of continuing his streak. Although his streak ended it ranks third in NFL history for a player to increase receptions in each of his first seven seasons.
Wayne only needs 1,146 yards to tie Raymond Berry's record career receiving yards of 9,275, which is second to Marvin Harrison's record of 14,580 yards for his career. The 2008 season also saw Reggie tie, then pass, Jimmy Orr's record 50 touchdowns for a career. He ended the season with 53 career touchdown receptions. He still needs 15 touchdowns to tie Raymond Berry's record of 68 career touchdown receptions, which is second best all time for a Colt receiver. Again he ranks behind Marvin Harrison who has 128 career touchdowns.
Wayne is closing in on Marvin Harrison's 70.6 yards per game average. He now has an average per game yardage of 65.0 only 11.6 yards per game short. In the upcoming 2009 season Reggie Wayne will continue his quest to be the first or second franchise receiver in colt history. Payton Manning will still be the quarterback, but with Tony Dungee retiring the offense, for now, will remain a mystery yet to be calculated.
