There have been many defensive standouts in football, and with football being so competitive, it's hard to hold a record for very long. There has been a player who remains a standout on and off the field. Dwight Freeney is one of them, and he plays for the Indianapolis Colts.
Dwight was born on February 19, 1980 in Hartford, Connecticut. He has been a top player since high school, breaking several records. One of those records still holds water to this day, and that one is the most sacks at that school. That stardom continued into college at Syracuse University, where he began as a starter and continued as a starter for two years. He set yet more records with the most sacks in a single season, and ranks second in school history with total career sacks. It was not long until the NFL spotted this talent, and he was picked up by the Indianapolis Colts in 2002. Freeney’s record-breaking performance followed him into the NFL by setting a rookie record of the most forced fumbles by a rookie in one season. The 2004 season was a fantastic season as well, as he was able to earn his spot in the history books as being the third fastest player to reach 40 sacks. In that same year, he led the NFL in total sacks with 16 sacks for the season. In 2007, his contract was coming to an end and the Colts made sure that they kept him. He signed a 6-year, 72 million dollar contract, making him the highest paid defensive end in the NFL at the time.
In 2007, he injured himself during one of his spin moves, but he has vowed to return for the 2008 season.
