The Indianapolis Colts are trying to strengthen their team back up to where they were in 2006. They lost some key players last year in Freeney, Mathis, and Brock. Their defense is definitely not number two in the league anymore. So president Bill Polian put his scouts to work in drafting rookies and picking up free agent rookies.
The Colts picked up wide out Pierre Garcon from a D3 school. Tony Dungy was worried about his level experience, but he did everything you can ask of a wide out in camp. They needed to fill the void of injured Dwight Freeney, so they picked up Marcus Howard in the fifth round. Hoping he tallies up on the sacks and adds to the defensive pressure. Polian went ahead and picked up a buddy for Howard on that defensive line with Curtis Johnson. Scouts compare Johnson to Joey Porter, with out Porter’s instinctive experience. With work on his pass drop and coverage skills he can be a dynamic defensive end in the league. A great pick up for defensive back in Jamie Silva out of Boston College. He was a serious play maker at safety in college. To round off the extra help for Indianapolis’s defense, they picked up Philip Wheeler a linebacker out of Georgia Tech to come in during dime and nickel packages.
Overall the off-season was extremely busy for the Indianapolis Colts. The season will be even longer while they try and season their rookie filled defensive lineup. President Polian and coach Dungy reinforce after preseason that they are pleased with their 2008 draft class.
