Johnny Unitas and the Baltimore Colts

Johnny Unitas is a legend who played in the National Football League on a team known previously as the Baltimore Colts. Those Baltimore Colts are now the Indianapolis Colts but in most people’s minds they still belong to Baltimore. Johnny was the quarterback for the Baltimore Colts. He is known as "The Golden Arm" to football fans young and old.

Most of Johnny's professional football career was spent in Baltimore playing for the Colts. The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Johnny in 1955. They cut him from the team that same year because they felt they didn't need him. The Colts called him up in February of 1956 and he stayed with them for seventeen years. His first players’ contract with the Colts was for seven thousand dollars.

Johnny still owns the record for touchdown passes thrown in forty-seven consecutive games. He was Most Valuable Player three times in his career. He still owns several other NFL records such as most pass attempts, most total yards and most touchdowns.

Johnny Unitas is considered by most people the best quarterback who has ever played professional football. "The Golden Arm Award" is awarded each year to the top senior college quarterback by the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation.

Johnny lead the Colts to three NFL championships and a Super Bowl win while passing over forty thousand yards in those seventeen years. After he left Baltimore, Johnny ended his football career after playing one year with the San Diego Chargers. He retired in 1973. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979.
