Retired Colts Players

There are seven Baltimore Colts players’ jerseys that are retired. The Colts later moved to Indianapolis and are known as the Indianapolis Colts today. There is some controversy over whether these old timer jerseys should be reinstated for use, since they were for the Baltimore Colts, and now the Colts are in Indianapolis. Whatever the decision, these seven old timer Colts have their place in history.

“The Golden Arm”, Johnny Unitas was named the “Greatest Quarterback of All Time." He played for the Baltimore Colts for seventeen years. Among his many records, one still stands as one of the greatest in football history. Unitas made passes in forty seven consecutive games that resulted in a touchdown between 1956 and 1960.

There are six other Colts players that were part of the Colts legacy during the 1950’s and 1960’s that should not be forgotten. Running back, Claude “Buddy” Young was considered the fastest football player in his era, was nicknamed the “Bronze Bullet." He retired from the Colts in 1955, and was the first Colt to have his number retired.

Running back and receiver, Lennie Moore, played for the Colts from 1956 to 1967, and is on the list of the 100 Greatest Football Players. Art Donovan, defensive tackle from 1951 to 1962 was known as the gentle giant. Jim Parker is considered by many as the greatest offensive lineman ever. He played for the Colts from 1957 to 1967. Raymond Berry, Colts wide receiver from 1955 to 1967 also made the list of the 100 Greatest Football Players. Gino Marchetti was voted the greatest defensive end in pro football history during his 1953 to 1966 tour with the Colts.
