When the Indianapolis Colts first drafted Syracuse University's Dwight Freeny with the 11th pick in the 2002 National Football Draft, they knew they were getting a game changing defensive player. In college, Freeny only played the last two season for Syracuse before being selected by the Colts in the NFL draft.
During his short time at Syracuse, Freeny set the school's record for sacks in a season with 17.5, and finished with 34 sacks for second all-time at the school. He came to the Colts with the raw talent to play defensive end for the team, and set the NFL's rookie record for forced fumbles with 9. For his efforts, Freeny was runner-up for the Rookie of the Year honors. In his third season,he lead the NFL in sacks with 16. In 2003 and 2004, Freeny was selected to the NFL's Pro Bowl as a defensive end. He continued his success by being selected to his third straight Pro Bowl in 2005.
In 2007, Freeny helped his Colts teammates defeat the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI to become the NFL champions. Freeny is currently the Colts All-Time leader in sacks with 62. After being selected as his team's franchise player in 2007, Freenly signed a 6-year, $72 million dollar contract, making him the highest paid defensive player in the NFL. During the 2007 season, Freeny was making his patented "spin" move and suffered a Lisfranc fracture in his midfoot and missed the entire season.
